Lost by GPS

Once we got settle into our new home and had a bit of orientation of Columbus, next on the agenda was to visit with Mike's family in Wooster. It was to be a birthday party for his young niece. On our way, we stopped for Mike's 12 years old daughter, Megan, who is a very accomplished musician. Then we headed North. Driving through Ohio's countryside for the first time was very interesting. Everything was brand new, be it of old barns or new barns, cows and horses. But both kids just wanted to be at the party as soon as possible and not paying much attention to my narration of the scenery. Two hours on, we saw a flood warning. Mike drove on, hoping it was just false alarm. No such luck. The flood totally submerged a stretch of our road to the party. We made a U-Turn then at a junction turned North per GPS instruction for alternative route. It took us to another road that was supposed to go above the flood. Mike said, Wooster was just few miles ahead on the other side of the flood. The road by the hillside took us back to the flooded road, from the North side.

As we made another U-turn, and saw the huge lake of the flooded valley, the two kids stopped chattering. The thought of not making it to the birthday party suddenly became very real. And that was such an incomprehensible thing to happen. Mike said we should had taken the freeway, instead off going through the countryside, and that would be like one and a half hours back. And the kids kept saying, no no no oh no, please please please, we want to party. Hmmm.

At the junction that took us to the North side of the hill road - we ignored the GPS instruction, instead we took the South hill road opposite of what was suggested by the GPS earlier. Then we followed back the GPS instruction. After circling a few hills, of small twisted hill road, we reached a road that looked more like a main road. Not too long after, Mike said, "That is my old school." "What!!!" We all got so mad at him. "Oh I know what I was doing." Said he nonchalantly. No we did not break any of his limb, we still needed him to drive us to the party and back.

Thirty minutes later we arrived at the much looked forward birthday party and met most of Mikey's clan - who all gave us a cheery "welcome to America."

The birthday party was held at the "Muddy Water Cafe". We came from Kuala Lumpur, also means Muddy Estuary. Heh, life is funny.

  1. I've lived in Kuala lumpur for a while, so that last mention struck me as funny.

  2. This reminds me of the time I was driving to Alabama and my gps kept trying to get me to go to Canada. Not exactly in the right direction.

    1. And I laughed out loud reading your comment, Melanie. What must we do with misbehaving GPS ;)
      It must be thinking Alberta?
